I loved that Conkin still took the time to develop her side characters. Emily, Thyme’s friend from school, was an excellent character that had a lot of depth to her. I also thought Conklin did a phenomenal job developing her characters in this story. She never made it obvious one way or the other and I loved that about the story it pushed me to keep reading and find out his fate. I was also left guessing the whole time about how Conklin would choose to end the story (in relation to Val and his cancer). This really allowed me to empathize with the whole family, including Val, and make it an even more enjoyable story. I think it was clever for her to write it from Thyme’s perspective, that of an outsider to the disease, yet still heavily affected by it.

This could go in so many ways for a kids’ book, but Conklin did it in a surprisingly sweet and heartfelt way. Aside from the pure emotion of this story, I also loved the cancer plot line. This story was filled with emotions, both happy and sad, and it evoked some real, genuine emotional responses from me as a reader. I adored the sweetness of Thyme’s character and how endearing and heartfelt the entire plot was. Review: Simply put, this book was amazing. Despite all of these challenges, Thyme still tries to make the best of her situation, but it won’t be easy. Thyme misses her best friend back home she hates having to share a room in their studio apartment with her sister, Cori she has to deal with a grumpy old neighbor she struggles to make new friends and fit in at school and her parents have left her in the care of a nanny. However, New York City isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Summary: Thyme and her family have moved from California to New York City so that her brother, Val, can take part in new cancer treatment trials.
